Recent Sound Mixer, PA System & Teleprompter Projects
Serving New York City, New Jersey, Philadelphia, Wilmington & PA’s Lehigh Valley
May 2024 – Sound system rental at a corporate meeting and Microsoft Meetings stream in Princeton, NJ. I provided complete turnkey sound system of PA system speakers, wireless mics, streaming interconnect equipment and operation. I can set up almost anywhere – even on a working kitchen showroom cooking island!
February 26, 2024 – Location sound system for CEE’s 2024 Survey of the States livestream event in NYC. Four tables mics were automixed into a close-proximity PA speaker system and simultaneously sent to livestream equipment.
January 24, 2024 – Public address PA sound system and sound mixing for live web stream of blackdoctor.org “Community Voices in Health Equity Summit” in NYC. Link may need a second click to play.
January 7, 2024 – Provided outdoor PA system for the Princeton Battlefield Society for re-enactment of the Battle of Princeton. A “simple” single-mic project, that wasn’t so simple. I set up the pictured tent the day before show – in rain, snow and a strong wind. I additionally ran 700 feet of AC power cable to a building, and another 500 feet of sound cable to a remote third speaker site. The next morning I began setup at 4:30 am for the 9:45 am show.
December 31, 2023 – Working as location sound mixer for NFL Films for HBO’s Hard Knocks at FedEx Field near Baltimore, MD. Assigned to “long lens” recording of Miami Dolphins head coach Mike McDaniel.
December 25, 2023 – Mixing a live outdoor show – from indoors! Re-enactment of George Washington crossing the Dealware, at Washington Crossing, PA. Since 2019 I’ve been the sound system vendor for this event, which requires 8 concealed wireless mics on actors and a PA system covering several hundred feet of acting and audience area – rain, snow or shine.
This isn’t a one day job or setup – there’s two shows, two weeks apart. Rather than build and strike the entire system twice I use weather-proof speakers placed up in trees and use arborist’s “throw bags” and line. The line is then used to strand 70-volt twisted pair single-jacket wire to carry both power and sound to six speakers placed along a 700 foot path. Reasonable volumes spread over multiple speakers provides the audience with an intelligible and comfortable show experience.
November 24, 2023 – Working as location sound mixer for NFL Films for HBO’s Hard Knocks at MetLife Stadium in East Rutherford, NJ. Assigned to “long lens” recording of Miami Dolphins head coach Mike McDaniel.
November 5, 2023 – Working as A1 location sound mixer for WABC-TV’s Eyewitness News pre-show of the 2023 New York City Marathon. The show was anchored near the starting position in Fort Wadsworth, NY at the Verrazzano-Narrows Bridge.
Two co-anchors and a guest using headsets with mics and a meteorologist position using a wireless lav, wireless hand mic and wireless IFB. All talent needed to hear each other before and after a “toss” but also not hear each other once a “toss” was complete, as off-camera talent often immediately communicated with producers back at WABC-TV’s control room. I handled this sound and IFB mix matrix locally on location.
Equipment, personnel and logistics was a mix from ABC network, WABC-TV and myself, requiring weeks of planning, communication and cooperation.
October 25, 2023 – This is “how I roll”. Traveling for an NFL Films project. Baggage fees past two cases becomes expensive quickly. Having an equipment cart wind up in oversize is a drag. My solution – figure out a way to fit as much as possible, if not everything, in the first two cases, utilizing the largest wheeled cases allowed without going into oversize or overweight. A sawed-in-half furniture dolly, a few webbed straps and a piece rope facilitates pulling and steering, eliminating the need for a cart. Clothes and must-carry-on lithium batteries go in the overhead backpack.
Wheels up!
October 16, 2023 – Location sound for ABC’s Good Morning America for a story on F1 racing’s Logan Sargeant. During cart race segments sound was captured by both body-worn and helmet-mounted concealed mics. Producer was able to communicate with Logan and Michael Strahan via IFBs during driving. As simple as this might sound it took careful pre-planning, including communicating with producers in advance. The mics and IFBs had to work over long distances, even from an enclosed cart low to the ground. The producer needed to hear the talent live as did the drivers need to hear the producer. Interesting observation – Logan barely said anything during the race, and what he did say he practically whispered.
Here’s the end result…
October 12, 2023 – My teleprompter at work on a corporate video shoot in Brooklyn, NY.
October 5, 2023 – Not exactly a work shot – rather an after-work shot, in Philly. Behind me is the building that once housed famed Sigma Sound studios at 212 North 12th Street, where many classic Philadelphia soul songs were recorded in the ’70’s.
September 28, 2023 – Sound Mixer for roundtable discussion for Working Nation in Atlanta. Automixers utilized for time savings in post production, with all mics ISO tracked for edit flexibility when needed.
September 20, 2023 – Teleprompter setup for a corporate shoot in Pennsylvania. When talent is extremely close to the lens, as pictured from talent’s position here, I keep the copy small and centered tight to the lens, to avoid on-camera eye scan.
August 17, 2023 – Working as a sound mixer for a live corporate meeting and two-way webcast in Holtsville, New York. I provided all sound equipment including wireless lavaliers and hand mics, automatic mic mixers, web interfaces, sound console, PA system and feedback suppression equipment.
August 10, 2023 – Working as location sound recordist for an episode of PBS’s Firing Line. Lav’ed and boomed the host and guest.
Even on something as simple as a one-on-one sit-down interview there can be days when one mic or the other just doesn’t sound right or may get dinged by clothing or hair noise. It’s best to try to give post as many options as possible to work with and to negate the need to interrupt an interview to address mic issues. Experience guides me when I can let certain sound matters go and when a corrective stop is absolutely required. Experienced sound mixers always work a balancing act between keeping workflow smooth and standing one’s ground, to insure sound compromises don’t get to the point of damaging the client’s content.
August 7, 2023 – Ah, the virtues of analog. My A2 on this project, Jim Pozzuoli, looks on at my “voice-lift” setup for a corporate meeting in NYC.
Some meeting spaces don’t make for easily-intelligible conversations across large spaces. Voice-lift can resolve these issues – even with cost-effective, simple, traditional analog gear. Here, I used 36 gooseneck mics mixed through 5 analog 8-channel automixers linked together, fed to 4 floor wedge speakers near the meeting participants. The end result… only 1 mic ever open at a time. I added a simple analog 32-band parametric EQ to the chain to further reduce any chance of feedback.
Try finding an easily portable digital 48 channel automixing sound console that doesn’t require time-consuming bank changes to make on-the-fly level changes with this many mics. Two words – you won’t. Why not just use a few PZM type mics on this type project? Been there, tried that. No good. Experience and a dash of reality gets the job done.
August 6, 2023 – Working as a location sound tech for ABC News covering the migrant housing crisis in New York City.
August 4, 2023 – Working as location Sound Recordist for NFL Films at New York Giants practice facility in East Rutherford, NJ. Recording a “coach wire” on NYG coach Brian Daboll. Zero clicks, pops or droputs – even from inside the building several hundred feet away. I have my tricks that make RF mics work well.
July 26, 2023 – Working as location sound tech for ABC News covering crane collapse in New York City.
Need me quick? I’ll do everything reasonably and legally possible to try and make your project work. I have my own vehicles, with NY press plates, to get wherever you need me, 24/7, in the Wilmington, DE to CT east coast corridor. My home base is right smack between NYC and Philadelphia.
July 2, 2023 – Outdoor PA system for music performance in Princeton, NJ. Five wireless hand mics, 6 PA speakers, 2 performer floor wedges, audience of 100.
June 22, 2023 – Setup for simultaneous sound and teleprompter in a rather cramped space at Barclay’s Center in Brooklyn, NY for 2023 NBA Draft.
June 20, 2023 – NYC corporate meeting automixed with an outboard automixer patched through a traditional analog sound console’s direct outs.
June 9, 2023 – Recording a house feed of Dave Matthews Band concert for ABC’s Good Morning America at Forest Hills Stadium in Queens, NY.
June 7, 2023 – 19″ High-Bright teleprompter screen setup for a corporate video shot in a very bright space in Brooklyn, NY.
May 28, 2023 – Podium mic arrangement, highly resistant to wind noise, for a PA system using two Shure SM57’s for an outdoor Memorial Day ceremony in New Hope, PA. Need an outdoor PA setup that can withstand rain? I’ve got it – wired as a 70 volt system, eliminating 120 volt AC power runs, a potential hazard outdoors. I fly the single-strand 70-volt line through trees when possible to remove tripping hazards.
May 8, 2023 – Location sound recording for New York’s WABC-TV Eyewitness News promos. Director of Photography Tommy Krakowiak.
May 3, 2023 – High-bright 19″ teleprompter setup for live audience CEO presentation in daylight lit space in New York City.
May 2, 2023 – Recording sound for a political spot recorded in Paramus, NJ.
April 12, 2023 – Sound for ABC News World News Tonight live shot on streets of New York City.
March 23, 2023- Sit-down interview with Broadway’s Bad Cinderella lead Linedy Genao for ABC’s Good Morning America.
March 3, 2023 – Location sound recording for sit-down interview for Broadway’s MJ: The Musical.
January 29, 2023 – Working as location sound mixer in Philadelphia for NFL Films at the 2022-2023 NFC Championship Game. Assigned to a Long Lens camera covering a player wearing a wire. Four other sound mixers cross-recorded each other’s assigned player for redundancy, as well as each of us recording everything to two recorders – in my case a Sound Devices 633 and a Zoom F8 as backup.
January 15, 2023 – Sound Mixer for NFL Films for Dolphins at Bills game in Buffalo, NY. This was a long lens camera position for recording of a Dolphins player wearing a wire.
December 25, 2022 – Working as Sound Mixer and PA system vendor for live re-enact event of Washington crossing the Delaware. 9 speakers along a 600 foot stretch along the river viewing area for the audience of around 1,000 people. A lot of careful pre-testing and leveling, many speakers at lower volumes to reduce delayed audio bounce throughout the site, automixers, and 4 speaker EQ zones. The primary 2 of 5 mic’ed re-enactors get double lav’ed. All the lavs are concealed for wind protection and maintaining the period appearance of costumes. My 3rd year as the Sound Mixer and PA system vendor for this show.
Dec 9, 2022 – Sound Mixer in Brooklyn, NY for ABC’s 20/20 on a true crime story.
November 6, 2022 – Sound Mixer on Staten Island, NY for WABC-TV’s live Marathon Sunday show. Good thing neatness doesn’t count – the tent folks provided one table to set up on! We make it work with what we’re given. 2 hosts and 1 guest at desk with headset mics and meteorologist on foot with wireless lav and stick mic, all with custom mix minuses in respective ears. My third time working this show as Sound Mixer.
October 26, 2022 – Simultaneously operating teleprompter and recording sound for a cultural documentary at Butter Tree Studios in East Hanover, NJ.
October 16, 2022 – Sound Mixer and PA system support for BravoCon 2022 stage at Javits Center in NYC. The ambient noise levels required use of ElectroVoice RE50 reporters hand mics and small speakers placed near talent so they could hear each other. Automixers handled the task of keeping open mics to one at a time, keeping the air mix intelligible and preventing PA system feedback. Here’s one segment from about 30 shot over 3 days.
August 31, 2022 – ABC Good Morning America segment at the grand opening of The Jackie Robinson Museum in New York City. Interview with LA Dodgers’ David Price and Mookie Betts.
August 19, 2022 – An NFL Films shoot in their own Camera Dept. room. A treasure trove of film history atop those lockers in the background. I felt like a little kid in a candy store – and I’m a sound guy!
July 21, 2022 – In a cramped control room for a series on Crackle. Doing prompter on this project.
June 20, 2022 – Shoot for NBA Entertainment with Donovan Mitchell in Greenwich, CT.
June 9, 2022 – ABC News live shot for World News Tonight during NBA Finals in Boston with correspondent Will Reeve and DP Akram Abi-Hanna.
May 24, 2022 – Memorial Day outdoor event for the Friends of Washington Park, along the Delaware River in Washington Crossing, PA. Two Shure SM57 hard-wired podium mics, one directional wireless lavalier hidden under SM57 high wind ball for backup, and wireless hand mic as last-line-of-defense backup. Two speakers under tents and two speakers just outside of tents. Two “whisper” gasoline-powered generators to run show, placed far outside audiences range of hearing.
May 23, 2022 – a 40-mic roundtable discussion setup for a corporate client in New York City.
May 11, 2022 – Shooting a corporate video in Watertown, New York.
May 10, 2022 – NFL Films production for Epix Icons featuring John Madden. This unique artistic means of showing footage of someone who has passed required sound matching the grandeur of the space. From my experience with PA systems I knew a mic could not simply be placed at the camera’s position – there would be far too much room delay. The 2nd photo reveals how to go about this. Another mic option, not shown, was placed about twice as far from the speakers – post needs options! Hear and see the results in a short promo.
April 14, 2022 – Yes, all that stuff on cart, for a live corporate webcast in NYC, including a PA system, fit into my Nisan Leaf EV!
February 11, 2022 – ABC Good Morning America live shot for Valentine’s Day contest. Shot at Shop Studios in NYC. DP: Tommy Krakowiak. Automix used for 5 guests. Live transcription sent over POTS.
February 3, 2022 – ABC Good Morning America tape segment with The Violin Conspiracy author Brendan Slocumb on stage at Carnegie Hall in New York City. DP: Tommy Krakowiak.
January 2022 – Location Sound Mixer for NFL Films Presents Kevin Harlan: The Best Job In The World. Recorded all non-archive/non-VO portions. I’m beyond grateful for opportunities to work with NFL Films and especially on this segment. Kevin and his family almost defy belief in their genuine kindness to everyone around them. If Kevin has the best job in the world then I have the second best, when I get to meet and work with crews and guests like these.
December 31, 2021 – Doing sound for an ABC News World News Tonight live shot, as seen in the far right corner of this panoramic shot taken in New York City’s Times Square. With hundreds of wireless channels running here I went all hard-wired with a lav, a hand mic and a headset mic, ready to overcome whatever loud levels hit us. The lav won out in the end.
December 27, 2021 – Doing sound for a weather live shot for ABC’s Good Morning America, seen from the talent’s view. I can be seen on the monitor in my big ridiculously warm puffy jacket taking this photo. The tech stuff – talent gets a double-lav and there’s a boom safety that can be seen next to the iPad. The wind cover I use on my boom is a Cinela Pianissimo – exceptionally wind resistant, light, transparent sounding and expensive.
December 12 and 25, 2021 – My sound mixing and recording equipment for the Friends of Washington Crossing Park annual reenactment of General Washington crossing the Delaware River. Myself and one assistant placed 9 speakers along a 600 foot stretch along the river viewing area for the audience of around 4,000 people. To avoid weather issues I mixed inside a nearby building, mixing in-the-blind with no view or overall ears on the PA speakers and show. How? A lot of careful pre-testing and leveling, more speakers at lower volumes to reduce delayed audio bounce throughout the site, automixers, 4 speaker EQ zones, and very clear pre-communications with the reenactors about working this way. That and my exceptionally-aware assistant on a two-radio, my “eyes and ears”. There’s an emcee at a podium that gets mic’ed with dual SM57’s with high wind covers and the primary 2 of 5 mic’ed re-enactors get double lav’ed. All the lavs are concealed for wind protection and maintaining the period appearance of costumes. Wireless mic interference from visiting media is avoided by providing media with wired and wireless feeds of the show mix. Further, I utilize wireless frequencies restricted to users holding an FCC license.
December 2, 2021 – Sound mixing and recording equipment with PA system for live stream. Recorded at NYFD Engine 55 for IAFF and American Cancer Society project partnership press conference.
November 28, 2021 – A wide-angle look at my sound bag used for NFL Films’ sync-sound-from-benches coverage at a Cleveland Browns @ Baltimore Ravens game. Two recorders running – one as non-stop safety backup in case of a failure or bone-headed move on my part. Always-running SMPTE time code slate on bag for instant access anytime camera op needs to slate. Not the tidiest bag – its put together for light weight and speed of running between benches.
November 18, 2021 – Sound mixing equipment for a corporate town hall meeting with PA system at Zebra Technologies in Holtsville, NY. I’m a big fan of simple dedicated-purpose analog devices. In live settings I like being able to physically see and touch actual mechanical settings in an instant.
November 6, 2021 – My trusty old analog Mackie sound console on set, in a tent, in Fort Wadsworth, NY for mixing WABC-TV’s NYC Marathon 90-minute pre-race show. I had 4 talent mics to mix and 4 custom mix-minus IFB circuits, one for each talent. For all of my work I prefer simple analog mixing and processing gear that can’t crash – unless I spill something on it. Notice there’s no coffee in the shot – just the run-of-show.
October 18, 2021 – Here I’m providing telepropmter services for the upcoming in 2022 series Inside The Black Box, featuring performances, workshops, and discussions about the role race plays in the entertainment world. Hosted by actor Joe Morton and acting coach Tracey Moore. Recorded at The Sheen Center for Thought & Culture in New York City.
September 21, 2021 – My sound mixing and recording gear for an interview with the band BTS and South Korean President Moon for an ABC News 20/20 segment. 10 wireless mics, recorders, automixers, splitters and DA’s for dual-language multi-camera recording, with translation, transcription and live-internal-to-ABC feed made for one mess of gear. Neatness doesn’t count on jobs like this – everything just has to work. Also, the “A2” has to be an A1 to successfully record something like this – there’s no way I can tend to this many details without the help of a fantastic A1. In this case that A1 was the guy in the blue shirt – Bill Hickey.
Sept 15, 2021 – Podcast recording for Episode 7 of Overcome with Justin Wren, featuring boxing legend Teddy Atlas, recorded at Teddy’s home in Staten Island, NY. I told my wife after this shoot that I’ll do 100 average shoots to get to do one like this – then corrected myself – and said 1000. Teddy and Justin’s thoughtfulness and kindness for us on the crew and for those they strive to help is simply amazing. If you have the time, nearly 2 hours, listen to these guys for some inspiring story-telling. Check out Teddy’s foundation and Justin’s foundation.
The tech stuff – First, I automixed the two mics used, to save Justin mixing time, and also iso-tracked just in case there were any imperfections in the automix. I used 2 Shure SM57 mics – not the “typical” podcast mic. Why? Spoken vocals sound great on SM57’s – they’re transparent. More importantly, SM57’s have some “reach” – they don’t require “eating the mic”. Hosts and guests can have an extended casual conversation, comfortably moving around, without significant sound level variation, but still without much background pickup. I’ll take Shure’s SM57 over Shure’s SM7B any day! Here’s the link to see and hear what I mean, from 00:08:17 to 01:59:25.
September 2021 – Recording sound for interviews with Diane Sawyer for ABC News 20/20 Special The Babies of 911 – Twenty Years Later. This was a 15-camera project, requiring 6 sound people and about 40 wireless channels. My job – stay with Diane safety-booming her interview subjects and running a second wireless mic on Diane, in case any already-in-place wireless experienced issues. Recorded at Brooklyn Botanic Garden in New York.
August 24, 2021 – Recording sound with ABC News’ David Muir for an America Strong segment in New York City’s Central Park. Concealed lavaliers on subjects, automixed to cameras and iso-tracked in sound bag.
August 8, 2021 – Recording sound from a Cincinnati Bengals player’s wireless mic for NFL Films in Cincinnati. We could hear this mic, dropout-free, from our practice field position before the player left the inside of Paul Brown Stadium 750′ away. The only exception was when he was deep inside the Stadium. From the moment he was in the outer halls of the Stadium there wasn’t a single click, pop or dropout – every second was usable. All my gear for this project, including backups, fit in two checked bags, no cart needed. Need wireless mics that work well? Give me a call.
May 5, 2021 – On-set in Newark, NJ for an episode of ABC News’ Soul of a Nation. Correspondent Byron Pitts in background and on monitors.

Early March 2020 – Live webcast sound for a corporate town hall at Ortho Clinical Diagnostics in Raritan, NJ.
February 2020 – Location sound for web branding video for Olipop brand soda, in Doylestown, PA. That ridiculous thing strapped to me is my gear in weight-reduced experiment mode. Eliminating the sound bag shed nearly 30% of the rig weight. The rig is attached to a Steadicam vest, to remove weight from my shoulders and spine. It all felt great!
January 2020 – Live and recorded sound for 37-mic corporate meeting for New York Life Insurance Company at their NYC headquarters.

One of my two Zaxcom RX200 stereo digital receivers sits atop a Sony VENICE camera. Hard to see it with all the stuff on the camera! It’s the blue box toward the back. The self-powered receiver supplies time code to cameras as well, locked to the time code of my Zaxcom Nomad recorder. One of my favorite production sound tools!
